Hello

Instructional Designer

Fan Yu, PhD

I design learning that people actually use.

I earned my Ph.D. in Information Science and Learning Technologies from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where my dissertation examined how serious games shape middle school students' science self-efficacy. I then joined the Learning Engineering Institute at Arizona State University as a postdoctoral researcher, working on AI-powered learning tools and the design decisions that make them worth adopting.

Today, I manage a learning center serving over 200 students in Cupertino, California. It is the same work at closer range: reading what the data says about a student's progress, sitting with families to turn it into a plan they can act on, and carrying what I hear back to the people building the product. Research taught me what works. Running a center taught me what makes people show up.

I keep coming back to education because learning is the one skill that keeps paying. My goal is to design experiences that leave people better at learning itself - not for a course, but for the decades after it.
